Obesity Treatment:
diets, exercises, weight-loss pills, plastic surgery. Their pros and contras.

Obesity and weight problems are topical concerns, and the press routinely provides a speaker-system for some of the most scaremongering reports. There is, however, plenty of reasoned research and practical help available for those wishing to lose weight.

Amongst the uncontroversial treatments for obesity is diet therapy. This should be tried for six months, alongside behavioural therapy and increased exercise, before considering moving on to drug therapy.

Diet therapy is simply changes in lifestyle, behaviour and reduction of calorie intake. The traditional model of 'dieting' has been thoroughly discredited, and should be avoided as it usually leads to a loss of morale and feeling of defeat. A diet therapy plan can include taking part in cardiovascular exercise and removing a certain number of calories from one's diet; in cases where only the former is tried and there are no changes to the diet at all, it is still possible to lose an incredible amount of weight. A consultation which a doctor is often the best way to plan one's 'diet therapy'.

Behavioural therapy consists of making the behavioural changes necessary to maintain the changes made to one's diet and exercise regime. For many people, these behavioural changes include attending a weight loss support group, taking part in stress management groups or exercises and providing incentives for maintaining the weight loss program.

Where a combination of these therapies has been tried for a minimum of six months and no significant improvements have been made, doctors may recommend a course of weight loss drugs such as Bontril. These drugs may be prescribed to be taken in conjunction with the diet and behavioural therapy.

The weight loss drugs prescribed by a doctor will have been rigorously tested to ensure that they comply with FDA regulations, and will either reduce the appetite or limit the absorption of fat from the intestines. In some cases, drugs which encourage the production of serotonin (i.e. antidepressants) will be prescribed, as it is known that this hormone is responsible for the feelings of hunger and 'fullness'.
